For My Family

Copyright Carol Reffold
The "Patchwork Poet"

Born at Woop Woop, in the Mallee,
happy childhood on a farm,
went to college, worked in fashion,
led a life of fun and charm.

Met and married, Jim, my soul-mate
not quite thirty years ago.
Working, travel, friends and family,
they’re the things that you all know.

What you see is what you get folks.
As I stand here, what I see
are those people whom I treasure,
some of you have made me "me".

Mum and Jim, I wish to honour,
all those things you’ve done for me.
Paul and Karen, and the children,
"Happiness" is what I see.

To the rest of all my family,
and my friends from far and near,
you know that you’re all special,
and I love you being here.

Just remember that I thank you
for the blessings which you’ve brought,
and to Jim and Mum, especially,
for those lessons which you’ve taught.

That’s the past, this is the present,
now my future’s just begun.
Life is great, my health is O K
- all I need’s a hole in one!

You know my hobbies, playing bridge,
golf and travel, "slowing down".
As I look towards the future,
I have it all - country and town.

I have been so very happy,
be it city, or the coast.
If you were to ask me, "Dearie,
what thing would you want the most?"

I would have to answer, simply,
"Could it all stay just the same?"
Mirrors tell me time is passing,
and I know life’s not a game.

Now I’ll share my life time’s motto, "Good things come to those who wait"
I waited ‘til I was thirty,
then I found my perfect mate.

Who’d believe that my life’s journey,
family, Jim, and with him, kids,
would have been so very special?
I wouldn’t change a thing for quids.
